Once upon a time, bored with life apart from a real passion for music, we decided to set up Undergroove Fanzine in a bid to promote new talent we adored and feature bands with interviews telling it exactly how it was. Completed with a dash of irreverent humour through some rather ludicrous cartoons, the fanzine was born and a total of 11 printed issues were produced and sold at gigs and through mail order all over the place - from Bognor to Brazil and from Ipswich to Israel. The Undergroove Revolution began. But still we wanted more, so we set up Undergroove Recordings - and set about putting our money where our mouths were and actually putting out our own CDs. Residing in the bedroom and relying on a thread-bare budget, we began.. We released our first EP - Shallow's critically acclaimed debut release 'Live At Heimi Hendersons' in November1998. Only a few remain out of the 500 we sold at gigs and through mail orders. If you haven't got a copy - why not? Buy it now, here! Recorded at Nottingham's Square Studio and produced by Dave Chang - Metal Hammer described the band as "better than Kyuss". The band went on to sign to the mighty Rise Above label, owned by Cathedral mainman and doom guru Lee Dorrian. They've since released their debut album '16 Sunsets In 24 Hours' and although they've just renamed themselves to The last Drop, their second album has just been released. Next up was the mighty sludge beast called Charger. Erupting out of Stoke-On-Trent, we loved this band the minute we heard their 'Haulin' Ass' demo. We signed them in January 1999 and the band went on to record the awesome 'Fuzzbastard' EP. Recorded at Backstage Studios in Derbyshire, the EP was recorded in a meagre 12 hours with Dave Chang at the helm. It received wicked reviews in fanzines and the national press with Kerrang! describing it as being "certainly not pleasant but pleasurable" and awarding it 4/5 in the singles pages. Metal Hammer scribe (and Total Rock DJ) Malcolm Dome described the band as the "new fakirs of fuzz", while Terrorizer gave the EP 7/10 and gave the band a thumbs up. Since then Charger toured and toured and in 2000 recorded their mighty follow-up 'The Foul Year Of Our Lord' for Undergroove. While the band write their new album, Undergroove have just re-released 'Fuzzbastard' with additional live tracks, demo and live videos. Now in 2002 Undergroove Recordings continues to grow with three new projects underway - Matter - the fucked-up bastard offspring of Napalm Death, Medulla Nocte and Confessor. Severance - who mix up the best of the American metal underground (Coalesce, Dillinger Escape Plan et al) with the death riffery of Obituary; and 3 Stages Of Pain - who's fucked up noise sounds like Fugazi jamming with Iron Monkey! Keep an eye out for all three - it's going to be an exciting year! Darren Undergroove- February 2002. Post script..... September 2003 Well Severance became Johnny Truant and by now you should all know about them! 3 Stages Of Pain sucker punched everyone with their blistering debut 'With Chaos In her Wake', Charger moved home to Peaceville and released their blinding full length 'Confessions Of A Man ..' and Undergroove continues to build its little family. Keep an eye out soon for releases by Cubic Space Division, The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg, Black Eye Riot, G. U. Medicine, Aped Bi Sapien and then of course there's our venture into vinyl land with the new 27 record 'Animal Life' ...... anyone for 5" white vinyl?! Now I don't know about you, but we're fucking excited ....... Thanks for the support everyone! |
